Safe Teeth Whitening Practices for Summer
As summer approaches, many people consider whitening their teeth. Almost anyone can whiten their teeth, but there are some important considerations. Let’s review safe whitening practices and the options we provide to patients.
Is Teeth Whitening Safe?
The most common question we receive is, “Is it safe?” When used as instructed, both over-the-counter products and in-office procedures are safe for teeth. Excessive use may damage the enamel, but this is easily avoidable if you follow directions.
Any whitening may temporarily increase tooth sensitivity, especially in areas of recession. This sensitivity doesn’t indicate a problem, but ask your dentist if you’re a good candidate for whitening. Those with severe recession, erosion, or wear may need to avoid whitening or use modified techniques.
Remember that crowns and fillings won’t whiten; they’ll remain their original color.
Whitening Options – Keep Your Teeth White
Toothpaste
The easiest place to start. While most whitening pastes contain similar ingredients, some may be more abrasive. Research to determine the best option for you.
Strips
Whitening strips can be tricky to use but are a quick way to lighten teeth. Ideal for last-minute events when you can’t visit the office.
Customized Whitening Trays
These trays are custom-made for your teeth. We provide whitening gel and instructions. Initial use takes two weeks, with touch-ups as needed afterward.
In-Office Whitening (ZOOM)
ZOOM is our in-office option, offering the lightest shade in the shortest time. The 90-120 minute appointment involves applying a whitening gel activated by a blue UV light. Custom trays for at-home touch-ups are included.
Don’t Forget Good Homecare
Good homecare helps keep teeth naturally white. We recommend:
- Brushing twice daily with an electric toothbrush
- Flossing or using a water flosser daily
- Using fluoride toothpaste
- Using sensitive or high-concentration fluoride toothpaste before whitening
How Long Will Results Last?
Results depend on your homecare and habits. Coffee, red wine, and tea can stain teeth faster. To maintain results:
- Rinse with water after consuming staining beverages
- Use a compostable or metal straw
- Maintain excellent homecare
- Limit staining beverages
ZOOM whitening can work wonders, and you can maintain the shade with custom trays at home.Everyone’s mouth and habits are different. We’d love to discuss the best whitening options for you at your next visit!
